Canada’s Wilkerson and Bukovec remain perfect and advance to quarter-finals in Germany

Canadian beach volleyball duo Brandie Wilkerson and Sophie Bukovec remained undefeated and advanced to the quarter-finals atop their group at the FIVB beach volleyball Pro Tour Elite 16 event in Hamburg, Germany, Friday.

The Toronto natives, who entered the tournament ranked 22nd in the world, defeated Esmée Böbner and Zoé Vergé-Dépré of Switzerland (14-21, 21-15, 15-9) in the Group D final.

Wilkerson, 29, and Bukovec, 26, picked up two victories on the first day of competition, beating Italians Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi and Germans Sandra Ittlinger and Isabell Schneider respectively.

The Canadian duo teamed up ahead of the 2022 season and in May finished second at the world championships in Rome.

Wilkerson and Bukovec will face Brazilians Carolina Solberg Salgado and Barbara Seixas de Freitason in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 6 a.m. ET. The Brazilian duo finished second in Group C with two wins.

The FIVB Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 event in Germany runs through Sunday with quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches over the weekend. You can stream the event live on CBC Sports, the CBC Sports app and on CBC Gem, with the final scheduled for 9 a.m. ET on Sunday.
