In France, the number of road deaths increased by 12% in July compared to 2021, the Interior Ministry announced on Friday.

In its press release, the ministry also compared these figures with 2019, “reference year before health crisis”.

Thus, according to estimates by the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), “354 people died on the roads of mainland France in July 2022, compared to 316 in July 2021 (38 more killed, i.e. +12%) In addition, this figure is also up by +8% (+26 killed) compared to July 2019″.

In addition, the observatory notes that “travel is up slightly by +5% on average in July 2022 compared to July 2021”.

On the other hand, the observatory specifies that “the number of personal injury accidents recorded by the police stood at 4,745 in July 2022, compared to 5,093 in July 2021 (i.e. -7% and 348 fewer accidents) , and 5,287 in July 2019 (i.e. -10% and 542 fewer accidents)”.

In this press release, it is also stated that “6,018 people were injured in July 2022, compared to 6,698 in July 2021, a decrease of 10% and 6,792 in July 2019, a decrease of -11%”.

Conversely, with 44 killed, pedestrian mortality increased in July 2022 compared to July 2021, i.e. 10 more.

In addition, while the authorities had recorded 25 cyclists killed in 2021, and 22 in 2019, in July 2022, 29 cyclists lost their lives.

“The mortality of motorized two-wheeler users increased in July 2022 with 98 killed compared to 85 in July 2021 (i.e. +13), and 92 killed in July 2019 (i.e. +6)”, adds the press release.

– Less deaths for motorists

Unlike other modes of transport, mortality among motorists is down slightly with 158 killed in July 2021 compared to 160 in 2021 (-2 killed) even if there is an increase compared to July 2019 when 142 motorists were killed.

Finally, the observatory is still pleased with the drop in mortality among under-18s in July 2022 compared to July 2021 and July 2019: 17 killed in July 2022 compared to 24 in July 2021 and 18 in July 2019. young people aged 18 to 24 is also down slightly in July 2022: 58 killed compared to 61 in July 2021 (i.e. -3) but up compared to July 2019 (i.e. +7). The mortality of seniors aged 65 or over is on the rise: 89 people aged 65 or over were killed in July 2022, 16 more than in July 2021 and 10 more than in July 2019.

Still according to ONISR, 23 people were killed in road accidents in July 2022 in the Overseas Territories compared to 30 in July 2021 and 24 in July 2019. The number of personal accidents recorded by the police amounted to 264 accidents in July 2022, compared to 280 in July 2021 and 233 in July 2019. Thus, 316 people were injured during these accidents compared to 350 in July 2021 and 307 in July 2019.
